Classy Coscarelli gently nixes Ravager Kickstarter

[Update from the Chief Archivist: My posts on this topic were never a smear campaign against the individual who started this mess, but rather an effort to prevent phans from throwing their money at it. I was trying to stop it - and that goal has been met. I'll leave these posts up because this all did happen, but I'm removing the phan's name and details from this post.]

Well,
the whole fake Ravager Kickstarter thing got even weirder this morning and then came to an abrupt end this afternoon, but not before it had raised an astonishing $860 from naive phans. As it turned out, the campaign was neither a joke nor the effort of an internet troll. Its creator seems to have legitimately wanted to fund additional work on Phantasm V (insert Kevin Hart confused face here).

Kickstarter impresario ------- updated his $15,000,000 campaign with the shocking clarification that he wasn't actually associated with anyone involved in the production of the new sequel. In an update, he wrote: "It has come to my attention that a number of blogs online are stating that this is Fradulent or a scam. To clarify, we are in fact not associated with the filmmakers in anyway, However this is still an honest effort to raise money for the film, by fans, and for the fans. The purpose for the funds, are as stated in this projects description. That is what it will be used for."

----- then created a new perk for his Kickstarter at the $75 donation level that awarded up to 50,000 funders BluRay copies of all five films - despite the fact that no such releases have even been announced yet, except in the case of Phantasm II which is already available on BluRay.

News of this bizarre crowd funding venture spread out onto several other sites this morning before eventually catching the attention of Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli, who personally tweeted ---- requesting that he shut down the Kickstarter, which ----- then promptly did. You know, I've got to hand it to Coscarelli. Rather than his usual silent digital takedowns, the guy reached out to ------ on Twitter and with a very gentle voice and got what he wanted. Classy.

  1. Sad day when fans are made fun of for trying to help. Congrats on becoming a troll blogger.

  2. The gentleman trying to 'help' was doing so for 10% of the US$15M goal, which is US$1.5M. Absolutely a scam.

  3. That is the cost of the pledge prizes. Do the math.

  4. Some random guy tries to raise $15million for a group of filmmakers he doesn't even know? Vargas said it was for pick-ups. How do you know they even need pick-ups? You don't know anyone involved in the film. You have no idea what stage they're at with securing distribution. Plus, the guy was miserably dishonest by not even stating that he didn't know any of the filmmakers until he was called on it. AND he promised perks that haven't even been announced yet, much less released. Vargas has no idea how much those perks will go for retail-wise or when they will be released, yet he promised them anyway. YEAH, I'M CLEARLY THE BAD GUY HERE. Muahahaha.

    1. Pick up are an assumption. That is why it states it will cover Pickups/Marketing/Distribution. It was for whatever they needed, which is unknown to us.

The prize of the Phantasm V DVD was placed with a placeholder date of a year from now, and the prizes for Films 1-5 (Stated as on DVD or Bluray) are available on either DVD or Bkuray....right now (with the exception of 5)

And in regards to not stating that we are not affiliated, it was a matter of having the Kickstarter project approved. Kickstarter would not approve a project that you arent physically creating yourself. But we never stated we were affilaited with the film makers either. On the first news that people thought this was a scam I released a clarification. .

    2. Yeah, makes sense. This Chris dude creates a Kickstarter, stating that he is only holding enough to cover the prizes, tells Don he is doing this moments after launching it, sends an update yo every clarifying things immediately after articles like this are posted....has to be a scam.

And the writer of this article obtained proof that is was a scam before writin....oh wait

    3. That's where you're wrong. Most of Phantasm is currently out of print on DVD - only Phantasm II is available on any format right now from Universal. You can't provide DVD or Blu copies of 1, 3 or 4 because they're not in print. You didn't even bother to see if you could actually deliver upon the 50,000 perks you offered before you started taking people's money. And yeah, I'm the douche. Right.

    4. Um, In stock copies from vendors with existing stock were sourced.

But everyone else. calm down. Chief's just doing his due diligence. No need to get so negative on him. He runs a great site.

      Chill please. It's fine.

    5. I don't condone bashing Chief just because he has the Phans concerns in mind. The dude works hard posting content and cares about the Phans. Trust me I know how hard it is to market something. I give him props for being so diligent. I say we all take a time out.

    6. Since your stuck with 50,000 copies of Phantasm, can I buy some off of you?

  5. Hey Chief, guess what, you are also some random guy. What I get out of this is that none of us matter enough to try to help a film, and do something no one else will. You are such a douche,
